Dear Mr Stowell,

First of all, I have been pleased to receive your letter dated February 19 concerning the 150th anniversary of death of Abraham Lincoln. Secondly, I am delighted to answer you about what inspired Abraham Lincoln for French citizens. I have been also surprised to learn of this letter from my predecessors in 1865, showing all the support of our town at that time.

Nowadays, like many people around the world, President Lincoln embodies for French citizens a fundamental principle which is the equality of all men. His statement - As I would not be a slave, so I would not be a master. This expresses my idea of democracy. Whatever differs from this, to the extent of the difference, is not democracy - is a lesson to be learned for all of us.

Hoping that the memory of great leaders as Lincoln continues to inspire the largest number of men, I wish your celebration will be a success.
