Collection is essentially an extension of the John C. Black Papers, q.v.  Included are letters of John C. Black (1839-1915); his wife, Adaline (Griggs) Black; his son, John D. Black (1872-1959); his daughter, Helene (Black) Abbot; his son-in-law, Stephen Abbot; and Stephen’s father, William Abbot (1845-1919).

                                                               Scope and Content

 

John C. Black:  Papers, 1857-1915, (Box 1) consists mostly of letters to his daughter, Helene, while she was attending Vassar College, traveling in Europe and after her marriage to Stephen Abbot.  Black’s letters to his mother (1857-1861) while he was attendingWabashCollege and letters to his wife (1868-1878) are also included.

 

Adaline (Griggs) Black:  Papers, 1893-1906, (Box 2), consist mostly of letters to her husband during her European trip.  Also included are several letters to her daughter, Helene; a letter from her father, C. Robinson Griggs; and one from her brother, Albert Griggs.

 

John D. Black:  Papers, 1889-1960, (Box 2), consist of letters to his parents while he was working for the Hammond Electric Railway Company and while attending Harvard Law School, and letters primarily to his sister, Helene, and her husband while a member of the Chicago law firm Winston, Strawn, Shaw and Black.

 

Helene (Black) Abbot:  Papers, 1893-1959, (Boxes 2-3), include letters to her parents while attending Vassar and while traveling in Europe; and letters to Helene from friends and associates.  Later correspondence is mostly with lawyer Howard Ellis.  Two travel diaries (1952 and 1953), essays and stories, several scrapbooks, printed material, and memorabilia are also included.

 

Stephen Abbot:  Papers, 1894-1961, (Box 3), consisting of a few letters to his parents from Europe, West Point Academy, and Randlett, Utah; letters to him from John M. Palmer and other friends and associates; and a complete set of diaries from January 1, 1913, to April 25, 1961, describing daily activities and weather conditions.

 

William Abbot:  Papers, 1855-1920, (Box 4), include several letters to his son, Stephen, but most of the material concerns business and legal matters, especially the purchase of Indian lands in Utah.  Also included are holograph copies of the “The Pathfinder,” a literary magazine published (1861-1862) in Hillsboro, Illinois; an engineers report of a survey and estimate of cost of the Springfield and Southern Railroad Company, 1897; notary public commissions; essays and copy books; a cash book; and scrapbooks regarding Hillsboro, Abbot’s home.

           

Also included in the collection are letters of other Black family members (1805-1840) Box 1; a diary (1886-1890) and sketchbook of Mary (Black) Hart (Box 1), sister of John C. Black; an autobiography (1919) of Elise (Burghalter) Abbott (Box 4), wife of William Abbot; and a few papers of other Abbot family members (box 4).
