Word of commemoration by President of the Republic of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaite on the anniversary of the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States of America
President Abraham Lincoln was a great and influential leader not only in the history of the United States, but also in the history of the world.
For 150 years now, Abraham Lincoln has been a symbol of liberty, democracy and constitutionalism. His life testifies faith and dedication to the fundamental values of human freedom and dignity.
We all know Abraham Lincoln as an honest and upright man, a principled citizen, a master politician, and a committed public servant. In the hardest of times for his nation, he defended the Constitution, redefined the political identity of the American people and reinforced the foundations of democratic self-government. President Abraham Lincoln's integrity of character and purpose shaped the moral and political course of the United States of America.
Lincoln's actions against slavery were rooted in his strong belief in freedom and democracy. His inspiring fight for the right of all human beings to live free consolidated the concept of freedom and liberty not only for his country, but also for the rest of the world's nations.
At the time when the eyes of Europe were focused on North America, the people of Lithuania, occupied by a foreign country, started an uprising for their freedom and independence. Lithuanians, just like Americans, have always cherished human and democratic values and have never hesitated to fight for them.
One hundred and fifty years after the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln, we see that the struggle for the ideals of freedom, liberty and independence has not ended. So we must take on full responsibility for passing on these ideals to the future generations.
As we mark the anniversary of the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, we also celebrate the victory of freedom, democracy and humanity.
President of the Republic of Lithuania
