Anne HIDALGO

For all Parisians, Abraham Lincoln embodies the victory against slavery. A visionary President, he was the tireless architect of the advent of a free and modern State in America.

Using his intelligence, his beliefs and his exceptional oratory skills, Lincoln was able to launch a new wave of progress and prosperity throughout the continent. At the time when the first identity-related tensions were emerging in Europe, he played a decisive role in reconnecting the United States with the humanist ideals of the Declaration of Independence of 1776 and in offering to each American the concrete promise of a better life.

As an activist of liberty, equality and fraternity, the motto of the French Republic, I am particularly sensitive to the political courage that Abraham Lincoln still personifies today. He was an unequalled leader, ready to go to the front lines when the war was raging to deliver his famous "Gettysburg address" and pass is democratic ideal on to the whole world.

Because of its universal reach, the message of Abraham Lincoln had a resounding impact especially among the Parisians who are so strongly committed to justice and freedom. 150 years after his tragic death, Lincoln's message of progress remains alive and still represents a dream, a hope and a unique ambition.

On behalf of the fraternal friendship that unites Paris and the United States, I would like to associate all the Parisians to the solemn homage that the American people pay today to President Abraham Lincoln.
