Dear Dr. Stowell,
It is my profound honor to address you in relation to your initiative to reflect on the life and political legacy of one of the most notable leaders of modern times. The 150th anniversary of the death of Abraham Lincoln gives us a chance to remember ideals and principles for which President Lincoln fought for during his life time.
America today and the world today are indeed better and more just places due to his political vision, the courage and skills. The fight for the preservation of a better and fairer Union of American States was also reported and noted in Croatian press of that period. While first waves of Croatian immigrants in the United States were discovering and fighting for their new homeland, their countrymen back home were sensing and realizing that the American Civil War was not just a conflict between two irreconcilable visions of America, but also a pledge for a better future of the entire humanity.
In those times, as well as today, Abraham Lincoln has signified exceptional personality, a signpost of how political instinct and political ideals can harmonize and complement each other. The legacy of Abraham Lincoln, immensely important for the United States of America, is a legacy of a milestone in which Freedom claimed its decisive victory. All further steps for the cause of liberty and justice in America, and around the world owe to the inspiration of Abraham Lincoln. It is our honored duty to convey it to future generations.
