Biographical Note

Richard Yates Sr. (1815-1873) was governor of Illinois (1861-1865) and U.S. Senator from the state (1865-1871). For more detailed information please see inventory for the Yates Family Papers.

Scope and Content

Correspondence, speeches, scrapbooks, letterpress books, miscellaneous documents, and newspaper clippings, primarily 1834-1869. Material mainly relates to Yates's tenures as governor and U.S. Senator, with a few pre-Civil War business papers. Also includes biographies of Yates written by Richard Yates Jr. and Winfred A. Harbison, as well as a little undated post-Civil War correspondence from Dorothea Dix. Collection referred to as "Wabash Yates" to distinguish it from the Yates Family Papers.

Arrangement

This portion of the papers of Richard Yates was once part of a larger collection of Yates papers which came to the Illinois State Historical Library, the previous name of the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library (ALPL). Sometime before that gift was made, Yates's granddaughter (or great-granddaughter) gave a portion of the papers to Winfred A. Harbison, a professor at Wayne State University who was writing a biography of Yates. Only three chapters were written by the time Harbison died. In 1986 his widow and son donated the papers to Harbison's alma mater, Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Indiana, where they became the Harbison Collection of Yates Documents.

When staff at the ALPL approached librarians at Wabash College about collaborating on a grant proposal to digitize the Civil War part of both collections, Wabash College offered to donate the papers to the ALPL, reuniting the documents. The donation was completed in October 2012.

Although both collections contain parts of the same types of materials, they have not been intermixed. The Wabash Yates collection has, however, been re-boxed, renumbered, and in some cases rearranged to put like materials together. (Letter books have been boxed by size rather than date.) In most cases, original DC box number used by Wabash College have been provided to aid those who used the material at Wabash College or are trying to trace references to such material. However, DC numbers should no longer be used. Letter book inventories and other indexes prepared by Wabash College have not been edited by ALPL staff and are for in-house use only.

Acquisition Information

Wabash College donated the papers to the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library in October 2012.

Processing Information
