Biographical Note

Mt. Morris physician who served as surgeon with the 92nd Illinois Infantry during the Civil War. He was born in Wales, came to America when he was two years old and was orphaned when he was ten. He worked as an apprentice to a tailor in Milwaukee until he was seventeen when he decided to go west. However, his trip ended in Illinois where he spent most of the rest of his life. He got his medical degree from Rush University in 1858 and in 1861 he married Caroline Mumford. Shortly after the birth of their first child, Winston went off to serve in the army. The 92nd was stationed in Kentucky, Tennessee and later it marched through Georgia. Winston was there taking care of the sick and wounded for 3 ½ years. After the war he returned to Ogle County, Caroline and his medical practice. He also worked as surgeon for the Illinois Central Railroad.

Scope and Content

Copies of letters, 1862-1865, mostly to his wife, and a copy of his diary, December 1863-June 1864, 1865, and 1866. Clear and expressive writer, Winston describes all that he does and sees while encamped with the 92nd. He gives a detailed account of the practice of medicine at that time and his opinions on other surgeons he works with and the red tape involved in the care. He also ponders slavery and race relations among other issues of the time.
