Hon R. Yates

U.S. Senator

Dear Sir:

Will you

be kind enough to write me at your

leisure, that in compliance with

my recommendation; you com-

missioned R.S. Stevens (of

the LaSalle Press) adjutant of the

104th Illinois Infantry. You will

recollect, that I spoke to you a-

bout it, & recommended him

for that position, in your office in

Springfield & upon my recommen-

dation you appointed him to

that position. I desire this state-

ment for my own special benefit,

as certain parties are stateing that

I never mentioned his name to you

for that place, and that you

appointed him against my

express wish. I know that you

agreed with me instantly when

I made the suggestion to you.

Please give me such a state

ment at your earliest convenience

if you can recollect the circumstances.

Allow me to congratulate

you, on your election to the United

States Senate. I rejoice with you.

May God help you, in your new

& responsible station, and give

you wisdom in all things.

With my best wished & prayers

for your future prosperity in

this life, & in the world to come

life everlasting.

I am Your friend &

Obedient Servant
