Gov Richard Yates
I propose, by this communication, to ask a favor of you, which I hope you will not fail to grant. I have enlisted twice in the Service of my Country, and for two long years I have endured the hardships, and sufferings of a soldier's life. I was a stranger in Logan County when I became a member of the 106th Illinois Regiment, consequently I have had no one to use their influence in favor of my promotion.
But I have spent time, money and Strength in the cause of my Country, and in the vindication of the fundamental principles of our Government - hence, I feel myself justly entitled to a
commission, which I hope you will be kind enough to grant to me.
I refer you to John Gillett & Richard Gill of Logan County, and Dr Lamphear of Springfield as to my character, and claims for the favor I have asked.
Col Henry Yates would willingly recommend my promotion if a vacancy would occur in the company to which I belong; but the probability is, that no such vacancy will occur during the period of my Service - hence, I must look for the favor outside of my Company. Having served faithfully for two years, as a private Soldier, I hope, now, that you will confer the honor upon me of holding a commission in the Army of the United States.
The position I request is, that of Lieutenant or Captain. I can send you recommendations from several good men if it is necessary.
Do what you can for me, and you will receive the gratitudee of
Your humble Servant
J. G. Chalfant
Co "D" 106th Regt Ill Vol
P.S. If Gov Yates' private secretary opens this communication, he will oblige me very much by handing it to the Govenor himself.
