Lithograph of the 83rd Illinois Infantry, Company A, "Mustered into U. S. service, Aug. 11th, 1862, by Captain Christopher, U.S.A. at Monmouth, Ill." Although it was not an immigrant regiment, it included several immigrant soldiers, including William Chicken, a married miner from Hebron, England, and Nels J. Nelson, a shoemaker from Colmar, Sweden. Both men lived in Monmouth, Warren County, Illinois. Note the original oval portraits pasted around the edges of the broadside.
